Oil & Gas

Drilling Down

On the surface, you’d think oil and gas production was like any other industry. It’s not; it’s highly complex. Which is why you need a specialist team of experts with barrels of experience in the sector.

LAW understand the challenges of the oil & gas sector.

Over 300,000 jobs in the UK continue to be supported by oil & gas production.  The offshore oil & gas industry has evolved over the last 50 years and in this time has generated thousands of jobs and has paid more to the Treasury than many other industrial sectors. Oil & gas provides more than 75% of the UK’s total primary energy and the industry has been key to the UKs security of energy supply. The UK Continental Shelf provides more than half of the UK's oil & gas demand.  Oil & gas will continue to provide two thirds of the total primary energy supply by 2035, according to the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy.

The UK upstream oil & gas industry, together with its extensive supply chain, is spread throughout Britain.  Nearly 60% of jobs in the industry are in England and around 40% are in Scotland, largely in and around Aberdeen.  The UK oil & gas industry continues to improve safety through leadership, communication and cooperation.  This is supported by a well established and world-class legal framework.

Against a backdrop of lower oil prices, operating costs have significantly reduced and there continues to be a focus on efficiencies; many operators and suppliers are continuing to streamline their operations and seek innovative ways of working.

Our team of highly experienced employment lawyers have significant expertise in advising on all sectors of the oil & gas industry including marine, subsea, drilling, oilfield services, construction, and decommissioning.  We guide employers through all aspects of employment law within the industry - from complex reorganisations; TUPE transfers following a merger/change in supplier; to collective grievances and industrial relations.

Our experienced team of HR consultants can also provide pragmatic, hands-on support to your organisation, providing on-site support as and when required.  We understand the adversities of those working offshore and the challenges which ad-hoc or rotational working patterns can bring.  Whether you require additional support within your HR team, or support with discrete HR projects, our Scotland-wide team are on hand to provide rapid, effective expertise.

In addition, our bespoke training services allow us to deliver tailored training on any HR or employment law topics, as well as management development skills; delivered to your exact requirements.
