The owners of Birmingham’s International Convention Centre were recently fined £400,000 + costs, for breaching Section 2(1) of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974.
On the 11th January 2019, a freelance stage manager was struck on the head by an 11.5kg scenery counter-balance weight, which fell from a high-level stage platform in Hall 1. The injured person suffered serious head injury, leading to extensive life-saving surgery.
Birmingham City Council’s Environmental Health investigated the accident. They found that guardrail protection measures were inadequate and the risk assessment failed to address the potential of falling objects.
